CHARACTER EDUCATION/SERVICE LEARNING PROJECT
OCTOBER & NOVEMBER, 2009
Ms. Haws, NSA Principal, introduced the children to their first Character Education/Serivce Project of the year, the Heifer International Foundation. The children seemed very attentive and intrigued by the idea of poverty and how they could help others in need. Ms. Haws explained to the children that each class would be purchasing an animal which would be given to a needy family or village to help improve their lives. Each classroom would have to decide which animal they wished to purchase and what type of fund-raising project they would initiate to raise the money for their animal.
After introducing this project to the children, Ms. Haws said, "I must tell you, after over 42 years with children, I can never fully predict what their responses will be. At the end of the day, a second grader hugged me and said, 'That was the best Character lesson yet!' The next morning, a kindergartener stopped me and informed me that he was going to buy a Water Buffalo. I shared with him that he had a great idea. He then whispered, 'Do you know what they are? I don't!' Our children at NSA are truly concerned about others and have become quite the entrepreneurs in making this project a success."
